Across the Namib

Added 04 May 2014

It looks like another beautiful day here in Namibia. Dawn is up early coordinating sightseeing flights, the sun is shining and the sky is blue. While some of our guests enjoy a flight over the Namib sand dunes others are taking breakfast on the lodge patio. Richard checks luggage and we are all aboard and away on time. Today we are heading north west. Our destination is the coastal town of Swakopmund.

First stop is Solitaire. We stopped here for lunch on our way from Windhoek so we know it well. The provisioning shop is behind the petrol pumps. The bakery is to the right, the café straight ahead and the toilets are round the back. Today is just a quick comfort stop!

Today's journey takes us across the Tropic of Capricorn so naturally we stop and take touristy photos. From here we drive through the spectacular Kuiseb Canyon, stopping at the dry river bed to enjoy our picnic lunch. Siesta time to follow, but not for our driver August as he must concentrate on the long straight road across the desert towards Walvis Bay. From here we drive half an hour north to the town of Swakopmund to stay two nights at the Hansa Hotel. We are greeted by a glass of bubbly which is not a bad start! Time to explore the town. Some of our guests even go paddling in the sea - which is apparently very cold!
