Sniffer dog finds apple
We enjoy a leisurely morning at the Lima Country Club. It is a grand and luxurious hotel with lovely rooms and lounges. Richard and Dawn check the luggage and we're ready for departure at 11.30am. Vanessa our local guide joins us and we drive to Lima Airport. There is plenty of traffic but we arrive on time and our LAN flight check-in is handled efficiently. The flight is just under 90 minutes in duration but the LAN crew still manage to serve tea, coffee and a snack. And they smile too. We land at Arequipa and in the luggage hall of the airport a security guard has a sniffer dog checking cases. It is a lovely golden Labrador until it finds an apple in Jane's hand luggage. Although fruit is allowed on domestic flights, the dog seems adamant he should have it. We think he has been trained to collect fruit. Our local guide in Arequipa is Alvaro and we are soon aboard our private coach and heading into town. Our destination is the Libertador Arequipa Hotel - the best in town, naturally. The usual procedure follows ... hand in passports, sign a registration card and collect room keycards. In the meantime the hotel luggage staff begin to sort suitcases ready for delivery. Richard and Dawn help and the staff then run (yes run!) the suitcases to the rooms. We are now at approximately 7,500 feet altitude and of course they are used to that, but it is quite amazing to watch. A complimentary welcome drink is included this evening so most guests head for the bar and order Pisco Sour. It seems to have become addictive. Buffet dinner follows - with a vast choice of hot and cold dishes and desserts. And so to bed.
