Exploring Lima

Added 01 Sep 2013

Breakfast is served in the restaurant and terrace. Quite a few quests are up early, one (we mention no names but possibly Gary) has been for a run around the adjacent golf course. Is that really necessary?! Most guests are very sensible and enjoy a leisurely and delightful breakfast. Around 9.30am we meet our guides Vanessa and Nancy and we depart on our Lima City Tour. We concentrate on the historical city centre which has some impressive architecture including the Cathedral and Presidential Palace. They are changing the guard so there are lots of people in uniforms and a military band playing. One very important gentlemen is standing in the middle on the top step. Is this the President or Army Chief? Vanessa tells us it's no one important and actually he looks quite like our coach driver. We continue and visit the Monasterio de San Francisco and the catacombs of Santo Domingo. A bit spooky in parts! After the tour, free time for lunch is included at the Larcomar centre at Miraflores which has numerous shops and restaurants and stunning views over the Pacific Ocean. This evening we drive to La Rosa Nautica, a renowned fish restaurant located on a magnificent wooden pier. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has three floors of dining. Naturally we have booked the private room at the top! Scallops, Mahi Mahi fish and chocolate cake follow. A typical (and intoxicating) Pisco Sour and wine is included and suffice to say we all stagger back along the pier at the end of the evening. Somehow, one of our Elaine's still manages to go paddling in the Pacific before getting on board the coach.
