Exploring Sauternes

We are up reasonably early. After breakfast we need to be on board our excursion coaches at 8.30. We are heading off to the Sauterne wine growing region. After a pleasant drive and photo stop, our first visit is to the Chateau Royal de Cazeneuve. We enjoy a wonderful lunch with a different Sauterne sweet wine paired with each lunch course. Very lovely, especially since the wines are 14%, 14 % and 11.5% alcohol respectively! After lunch, we are invited to see some of the rooms of the chateau and take a walk in the grounds.

From Cazeneuve we headed to Chateau de Roquetaillade for a special “extra” visit. We are greeted here by the owners, an English lady called Rosalind and her son. A very informative visit and let’s just say Rosalind supervised her group intensely!

Leaving Roquetaillade we have exactly 30 minutes to reach the town of Cadillac to rejoin our ship. The River Royale has sailed empty from Bordeaux to meet us in Cadillac for a late-afternoon sailing back, and our embarkation time is critical. Given the tides and limited docking facilities, this is no mean feat for our captain and crew – well done and thank you!

Later, we enjoy our official welcome aboard party and meet some of the key staff before a wonderful welcome dinner prepared by our Executive Chef, Lucian.

The day is not yet over! At around 9.15pm we join two open top buses for a guided tour of Bordeaux by night. It is such a beautiful city, wonderful 18th century architecture, the majority restored and well maintained.

PS: There is a large chateau just on the edge of the city centre that needs a little TLC and it is for sale if anyone is interested!
