From Sossusvlei to the Atlantic

Added 20 May 2012
Early this morning many guests joined an optional 40-minute sightseeing flight over the dunes to Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon. On their return everyone was very happy to have seen the most wonderful views and to have taken amazing aerial photographs of the Vlei snd Canyon. The rest of us enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at Sossusvlei Lodge before we all joined our coach for our departure. We're heading north west today to the coastal town of Swakopmund. First stop is a quick rest room break back at Solitaire, with optional apple pie purchases. From here we continued via the Gaub river and the magnificent Kuiseb Canyon, and enjoyed s lunch break in the dry river bed of the Kuiseb river. After lunch we literally drove across a dessert. This vast moon like landscape provided an excellent opportunity for a siesta while our driver, Bruce, concentrated on the driving. As we approached the town of Walvis Bay the gravel road turned into a tarmac road, albeit partly covered with the local pale covered sand. From here we drove north to Swakopmund and our new accoammodations, the classic Hansa Hotel. This evening we enjoyed an excellent dinner at the Hansa, complete with background music provided by a very competent pianist.
