Music at midnight

Added 16 Feb 2015

Following an early morning call at Havoysund the crew offer us “energy coffee” on the top deck. This tastes more like a mug of of sugar with a hint of coffee! Later we dock at Hammerfest, the world’s northernmost town. On the quayside you can visit the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Club and within an easy walk you reach the modern church and an excellent museum showing the reconstruction of the town after World War II.

Back on board MS Midnatsol the rest of the day is at leisure as we sail via Oksfjord and Skjervoy towards Tromso. Before dinner our tour director, Marco, gives a great presentation about Hurtigruten's voyages to Antarctica, including showing some of his own photographs. Marco has travelled to Antarctica on Hurtigruten ships Nordnorge, Nordkapp and Fram. Furlongs Travel have escorted guests to Antarctica aboard the same ships and are looking forward to our next voyage, in February 2017. We will be heading south of the Antarctic Polar Circle aboard MS Fram. No final details quite yet but if you are interested, please drop us a lline!

This evening, around 11.30pm we arrive in Tromso and most of us disembark to visit the Arctic Cathedral to attend a special Midnight Concert. Arranged for travellers aboard Hurtigruten ships the event features folk and classical pieces performed by an organist/pianist, a flugel horn player and a soprano singer. The musicians are wonderful. The acoustics are wonderful. It is a magical experience!
