Iron Gate Gorge

The clocks went forward by an hour overnight and we have been encouraged to get up early this morning to best enjoy a very scenic part of our trip, through the Iron Gate Gorge. The weather is a bit drizzly but those prepared to don a coat are rewarded with great views, and we all manage a glimpse of a rock-face carving of Decebalus (the last King of Dacia!). The sculpture was made between 1994 and 2004, and measures approximately 43 metres high, by 32 metres wide.

By the time we enter our first lock, the weather is positively sunny. We have also attended a talk by cruise director Adrian about his life growing up in Romania. Definitely his finest contribution, we learn about life under the communist regime and the 1989 uprising.

After lunch, we enjoy a relaxed afternoon although some have signed up for a tour of the galley with the chef. It’s interesting to see how all the food is produced in a relatively small space!
