Lucky Friday 13th

Added 13 Jun 2014

The buffet breakfast at the Windhoek Country Club Resort is varied and plentiful so it is difficult to prise our guests away! Luggage is loaded, water bottles are filled, sweets and biscuits are on board. August our driver and Uanee our guide are on station. We leave close to schedule and head south towards the small town of Rehoboth. This is the end of the tarmac road and also our first (and only!) comfort stop. Sadly at our regular stop (a Shell petrol station) the toilets are closed due to a water supply failure. But do not worry, we always have a plan B. There is another petrol station in town! We stop there and Richard goes to check the toilets before inviting guests to disembark. Yes the toilets are working but on the way back to the coach across the forecourt Richard nearly ends up on the bonnet of a car! Richard didn't see the car move and the driver didn't see Richard walking! Laughter follows. Dawn quickly checks if Richard has written an up to date Will.

Leaving Rehoboth we drive pass the Gamsberg Mountains and through the small settlements of Klein Aub and Rietoog. Solitaire is our lunch time destintion. This tiny place seems to be situated in the middle of nowhere. It boasts a petrol station, small shop, lodge, cafe and bakery. Richard and Dawn are treating everyone to lunch which features kudu stew and Solitaire's famous apple pie and cream.

About an hour later we should have been arriving at Sossusvlei Lodge however we are interrupted by numerous wildlife sightings. Today we have seen two giraffes (one sitting down), a blue wildebeest, a big family of kudu, hundreds of springbok and quite a few ostrich. One previous tours we have normally seen a few springbok and an ostrich or two! Friday the 13th has turned out to be lucky.

Sossusvlei Lodge is our home for the next two nights. We stay in little cottages which are part brick built and part heavy canvas. This is not camping! This is fairly posh. The Sossusvlei Lodge dinner buffet is also rather special. This evening we are offered BBQ meat from a choice of 9 different antelope, plus fish, a stir fry, a full range of vegetables, soup, starters, desserts and more. We do not go hungry.
