Polar Bears, a Midnight Concert and the Northern Lights!

Added 28 Feb 2014

Following an early morning call at Havoysund we are offered “energy coffee” on the top deck. From the taste it would perhaps better be described as a cup of sugar with a little bit of coffee added!

Late morning we dock at Hammerfest, the world’s northernmost town. On the quayside you can visit the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Club and within ten minutes walk you reach the church and a museum showing the reconstruction of the town after World War II.

Back on board MS Midnatsol the rest of the day is at leisure as we sail via Oksfjord and Skjervoy towards Tromso. After dinner Richard and Dawn invite everyone to a private lounge for a surprise get together. Once everyone is seated with a glass of bubbly some special guests arrive … the Captain, Chief Engineer, Chief Purser, Restaurant Manager, Head Waiter, Tour Leader and Assistance Tour Leader. The Furlongs Travel Speed Dating Programme commences! One of the officers or crew sits with a small group of Furlongs guests and answers any questions posed! After 5 minutes our special guests are moved to the next group and so on. Within an hour everyone knows a lot more about how MS Midnatsol works! The meeting is a great success and we thank Captain Knut Storoe and his team.

It is now gone 11pm and our next stop is Tromso. Nearly all of us disembark here to visit the Arctic Cathedral and attend a special Midnight Concert. Arranged for travellers aboard Hurtigruten ships the concert comprises folk and classical pieces performed by an organist/pianist, a cello player and a soprano. The musicians and acoustics are wonderful and it is a magical experience.

It is a late night but there is more to come. Back on board and sailing south we are awoken around 2.30 / 3am when the loudspeakers in our cabins spring into action with a “Northern Lights” call. It is definitely worth getting up for. There are bright green lights and plenty of movement in the sky. You can see why the Sami people thought the Aurora Borealis had magical powers!!
