Ushuaia to Buenos Aires
Our voyage ended in Ushuaia early this morning. Alongside us in port are two enormous cruise liners. They are huge and carry in excess of 2,500 guests each. The FRAM looks tiny in comparison but, in our opinion, all good things come in small packages so we are delighted to have travelled on our exclusive expedition ship. On disembarkation we say goodbye to the FRAM team and take the shortest bus transfer ever ... two minutes from the quayside to the waterfront parking area. From here we are free to explore the city of Ushuaia for a couple of hours. The weather is again beautiful blue skies and sunny. Some of the city shops are open and a few purchases are made.
From the city we centre transfer to the airport and check in for our flight back to Buenos Aires. Just over three hours later we are landing at Jorge Newbery domestic airport. Our main luggage took a little longer to arrive on the bag carousel than we hoped for. Actually it was only 35 minutes but everyone expects it to turn up immediately nowadays. The airport is relatively small and there were many aircraft acoming and going so it was hardly surprising. At one point the luggage information on the monitor screens changed and everyone got excited and ran over to the next carousel. Only to be told to go back to the original one!
Our private coach and guide met us at the airport and we drove back to our nice hotel, the Madero. This evening we enjoyed another lovely dinner in the hotel restaurant. The menu featured Argentinian beef and they certainly know how to breed and cook wonderful beef (apologies to vegetarians!). There was copious amounts of local Malbec and Chardonnay too. At the end of the dinner most of us kept chatting and drinking. It was a great night.
We disembark after breakfast and depending on final flight times we may enjoy some free time in town or an optional excursion to Escondido Lake before heading to the airport. Details and options will be advertised on board ship. The flight from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires is again organised by Hurtigruten, operated by LAN AIRLINES and approximately 3 hrs 30 mins in duration. On arrival at Buenos Aires domestic airport we transfer to the Madero Hotel for a relaxing 2-night stay.
