Visiting the Arctic Capital

Added 09 Feb 2013

Following a fairly early morning call at Harstad we sail past Trondenes Church, Norway's northernmost medieval stone built church. Late morning we visit Finnsnes, where a few guests depart to join a Wilderness Adventure including a snow mobile trip. Assuming they drive their snow mobile in the correct direction, we should see them again when we arrive in Tromso. Otherwise it's a long walk home. Early afternoon we arrive in Norway's Arctic Capital, Tromso. More guests leave us here to enjoy Husky Dog Sledding, and there are also sightseeing options and guided walks. Most of our guests trundle off to the Polar Museum. We've extended the opening hours and can enjoy a more leisurely visit, and there's certainly a lot to see. Tromso was, and still is, a centre for Arctic expeditions so we're learning lots about the heroic era of polar exploration. Around 6.30pm we sail from Tromso. Our returning snow mobilers and husky dog sledders report they are very happy with their experiences. Mid evening, the captain teaches about preparing fish - and our dinner features fish too! To top the day off, the Northern Lights appear yet again, better stil this time with the typical "moving curtain" effect. Off to our cabins, very happy!
